Copal Tree Lodge
At a Glance
Sitting high on a hill overlooking 12,000 acres of rainforest is one of Belize’s best kept secrets, and our favorite hotel in the country. Located in the small fishing village of Punta Gorda in southern Belize, the exquisite Copal Tree Lodge offers the quintessential Belizean experience – warm and welcoming staff, luxurious accommodations, an authentic farm-to-table culinary experience, and of course the best of Mother Nature’s spoils. Combine all this with some of the best wildlife viewing in the country, two nearby Mayan ruins sites, and access to some of the best flats fishing in the world and you’ll see why this is both a National Geographic Unique Lodges of World as well as an Orvis Endorsed Lodge.

The Copal Tree Lodge has gone through a few name changes and owners over the decades, with one common denominator bringing them all together – incredible fishing. In 2001 the famous El Pescador Lodge in Ambergris Caye bought the property and named it “El Pescador South”, which put it on the map as Punta Gorda’s first fishing lodge. In 2005 Todd Robinson bought the property and named it “Machaca Hill Lodge” due to the machaca fishing done in the Rio Grande right below the lodge. Under his guidance it slowly transformed into a luxury fishing resort, and after purchasing 45,000 more acres of rainforest he partnered with Belcampo’s CEO in 2009 to turn it into a working organic farm and agrotourism mecca. Throughout the years fly anglers started to hear about the incredible flats fishing offered here as the permit far outnumbered the fishermen. Orvis took notice and officially endorsed the lodge and now it’s known as one of the best permit fisheries in the entire world. Expert local guides will pole you across the flats, sneak you into the mangroves on the right tide, or even have you fish up the Rio Grande River for a variety of saltwater and freshwater species.
On your non-fishing days make sure to take advantage of the off-site activities like Mayan ruin sites, caving, snorkeling, and scuba diving. For you foodies, a tour of a local Mayan market or a culinary spice tour are wonderful off-site activities while on-site you can experience chocolate making, coffee cupping, coffee roasting, and rum tasting in their new distillery. You can also tour the organic gardens and farm to learn how Copal Tree is helping to save Belize’s indigenous cuisine by growing native crops, over 70% of which are used to feed guests at the hotel. If you just need a lay day to rset your arm from fly fishing you can lounge by the pool or indulge on a spa treatment at the gorgeous Jungle Spa.
