Costa Rica Fishing & Golf Info

When most people think of a tropical vacation with world class golf the images in their head are probably of Florida, Mexico, or the Dominican Republic. Costa Rica has always been such a popular destination for it’s flora & fauna, beaches, and amazing sport fishing it’s prowess as a destination for luxury golf vacations has largely been overlooked. Thanks to six 18-hole courses, including two ranked in the Top 30 for the Caribbean/Mexico region by Golf Week, that has begun to change over the past decade.

The first golf course in Costa Rica dates back to the 1940’s when a small par-3 executive course was built at the Costa Rica Country Club. Located in the affluent suburb of San Jose called Escazu, this members-only course didn’t appeal to or attract the masses so it remained the only golf course in Costa Rica for the next three decades. In the 1970’s another private club, the Cariari Country Club, built the first 18-hole course in the suburb of Heredia just north of San Jose. Off limits and out of reach financially for many Ticos, golf as a popular sport accessible to any and everyone didn’t catch on here until tourism started to boom in the 1990s. Since then four new 18-hole courses have been built at luxury beach resorts (including the Arnold Palmer-designed course at the Peninsula Papgayo), a new 18-hole public course opened in San Jose, and several par-3 courses have been created so enjoying a fishing & golf vacation is possible in many different corners of the country. Whether you want to play a round of golf to break up your fishing days or golf even more than you fish, Costa Rica now boasts six 18-hole championship courses, several state-of-the-art marinas, and a plethora of luxury resorts and boutique hotels to make your fishing and golf vacation here one to remember.

Where Are the Best Golf Courses in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is home to six different professional 18-hole golf courses and a handful of 9-hole executive courses dotted throughout the country. The best 18-hole courses are found in the Central Valley around the capital of San Jose, the Northern Pacific region of the country known as Guanacaste, and one along the Central Pacific Coast at the famous Los Sueños Resort & Marina. We can plan your fishing & golf vacation around a specific course you want to play or resort you want to visit, or we can custom design your itinerary so you can golf multiple courses and fish various venues. During the planning process we will let you know which airport to fly into and of course take into account local weather patterns and fishing seasons to make sure your time on the water is as fun as the time spent on the short grass. Below is a map and description of the six 18-hole golf courses in Costa Rica.

#1 – The Ocean Course at Peninsula Papagayo

At the top of our list is the spectacular Ocean Course located on the exclusive Peninsula Papagayo. Home to the Four Seasons, the Andaz Papagayo, and some of the most lavish private villas in the country, everything about the Peninsula Papagayo is five stars. Designed by the one and only Arnold Palmer, this course combines the contours of the peninsula that has you surrounded by both rainforest and the Pacific Ocean. The course is Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary and is endorsed by the United States Golf Association. Throughout the course they have labeled important trees and you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for both howler and white-faced capuchin monkeys. The golf facilities include a driving range, practice green, pro shop, and golf pros for private instructions. Rated as one of Golfweek’s Top 25 Courses in the Caribbean/Mexico and one of the ‘Top 100 Courses Outside the USA’ by Golf Digest, it will not disappoint.

#2 – The Garra de Leon at Reserva Conchal

Next on our list is the other internationally ranked 18-hole golf course in Costa Rica, the Garra de Leon. Designed by Robert Trent Jones II, the “Lion’s Paw” is found at the gorgeous Reserva Conchal property. This was the first Audubon-certified course in Costa Rica and boasts an impressive sustainability efforts including bambu tees and a new water system that uses 100% of the waste water from the Westin Conchal Resort to water the greens and gardens. Golfers should keep an eye out for local wildlife including monkeys, deer, coatis, and several species of birds. This long course features several changes in elevation, rivers, lakes, and 63 sand traps! The golf facilities include a driving range, practice green, pro shop, and golf pros for private instructions. The Garra de Leon has also been included in Golfweek’s Top 50 Courses in the Caribbean/Mexico, ranking between #18 and #30 since 2006 and has hosted the PGA Tour Latin America.

#3 – Hacienda Pinilla

Located on a sprawling 4,500 acre property that includes three miles of pristine beaches, the golf course at Hacienda Pinilla is as beautiful as it is challenging. Yet another Audubon-certified course since 2001, the course weaves a magnificent balance between the dry tropical forest and the Pacific coastline. The longest of Costa Rica’s 18-hole courses, holes #8 and #18 are both over 550 yds and #14 measures a whopping 653 yds! If you can time it right, try to play your back nine in the afternoon because holes #15 and #16 will treat you to an incredible display of colors as the sun starts to set over the Pacific. The golf facilities include a driving range, practice green, pro shop, and golf pros for private instructions.

#4 – La Iguana at Los Sueños Resort & Marina

One of our favorite golf courses in Costa Rica is the La Iguana at the famous Los Sueños Resort and Marina. Built to make Los Sueños a truly complete resort along with the marina, luxury condos and villas, and beach club, La Iguana is the only 18-hole course located along Costa Rica’s popular Central Pacific Coast so it serves anglers from both Los Sueños and Quepos an hour to the south. La Iguana offers golfers a unique mix of resort holes that weave through the various condos and private villas, holes that go deep into Los Sueños’s 1,100 acres of rainforest, all before ending with three holes along the coast. The rainforest is considerably more lush along the Central Pacific than the dry forests in Guanacaste, so if you aren’t accurate with your drives or long irons be prepared with a few extra sleeves of balls. During the round golfers can expect to see monkeys, beautiful scarlet macaws soaring noisily overhead, over 150 species of birds, and yes, plenty of large iguanas. The golf facilities at Los Sueños include a driving range, practice green, pro shop, locker rooms, and golf pros for private instructions and swing analysis.

#5 – Valle del Sol in San Jose (Santa Ana)

When the Valle del Sol 18-hole golf course opened in 2001, it finally brought golf in San Jose out of the private country clubs and into the public’s reach. Located in the western suburb of Santa Ana, Valle del Sol is an oasis in Costa Rica’s bustling Central Valley as the course is full of ponds, ducks, and colorful bougainvillea. Santa Ana offers visitors cooler temperatures than the golf courses located along the coast due to San Jose’s elevation of 3,000 ft above sea level while also being one of the hottest and driest regions of the Central Valley. During your round you’ll be caught staring at the surrounding green mountain ranges more than once, which include the Irazu and Poas Volcanoes. The 7,011 yd course favors accuracy more than distance, although the par-5 18th hole plays at 632 yds from the black tees. Golf facilities at Valle del Sol include a driving range, practice green, pro shop, club rentals, restaurant and golf pros for private instructions.

#6 – Cariari Country Club in San Jose (Heredia)

Costa Rica’s first 18-hole golf course was built in 1973 at the private Cariari Country Club, which is still going strong today. Located in the suburb of Heredia about six miles north of the capital San Jose, Cariari Country Club provides it’s golfers with cooler temps and great mountain vistas during their round. While not particularly a long course, architect George Fazio put a premium on accurate tee shots as many of the fairways are tightly lined with local Costa Rican trees. The 6,577 yd course used to be private exclusively to country club members, but has since softened it’s stance to become a semi-private course that is open to the public certain days a week. Golf facilities at the Cariari Country Club include a driving range, practice green, pro shop, club rentals, restaurant and golf pros for private instruction.

When is the Best Time for a Fishing & Golf Vacation to Costa Rica?

Costa Rica’s six 18-hole golf courses are spread throughout the country, and with two oceans we literally have great fishing and golfing 12 months a year. Costa Rica essentially has two weather seasons and two fishing seasons that closely mimic each other, so it’s easy to for us to match up the right golf course with the best fishing season based what time of year you are visiting. The courses in the Guanacaste region have different peak fishing seasons than the Central Pacific, so knowing which part of the country to visit is of the utmost importance. Once you contact us and we have a better idea of what you want to fish for, how many days you want to golf, and when you are visiting we will customize a vacation package to put you in the right spot, at the right time.

Costa Rica Golf Resorts & Accommodations

Like dolphin swimming with yellow-fin tuna, well rated golf courses and luxury beach resorts are often found together. That is certainly the case here in Costa Rica as internationally acclaimed luxury resorts like the JW Marriott Guanacaste, the Westin Playa Conchal, the Four Seasons & Andaz Papagayo, and the Los Sueños Resort & Marina are all home to their own 18-hole courses. If your idea of the dream fishing & golfing vacation is staying at 5-star luxury resorts you can’t go wrong with any of these. However, just like you don’t need to stay at a fishing lodge to experience great fishing, you don’t need to stay at a luxury golf resort in order to play Costa Rica’s best courses either. If don’t have a 5-star budget or simply prefer smaller boutique properties that is no problem, we customize 100% of our Costa Rica Fishing & Golf Packages so you can vacation close to one of these golf courses but stay in the budget and style that you are comfortable with. As a luxury vacation outfitter, we only work with the nicest 3, 4, and 5-star operations that meet our expectations for quality, reliability, and service. Being local experts, we have personally visited every single property we represent so we’ll use our personal experience to hand pick the perfect fit for your group.

Costa Rica Day Tours & Non-Fishing Activities

Our Costa Rica fishing & golf packages are flexible enough to allow you to experience the other highlights that make Costa Rica such a popular vacation destination. Costa Rica is just as famous for its lush rain forest, incredible wildlife, beautiful beaches, volcanoes, and of course a long list of adventure tours that it’s hard to fit it all in during a week-long visit. Whether it’s an off day from fishing or for the non-anglers in your group, there are several great eco and adventure tours available. We can also customize your Costa Rica fishing vacation so you spend a few nights in different locations throughout the country so you can see how diverse it is. The list includes:

Costa Rica Fishing FAQs

Do I need a fishing license to fish in Costa Rica?

YES. All anglers need a fishing license to fish in Costa Rica. These are sold by the Instituto Costarricense de Pesca y Aquacultura, or INCOPESCA as they are known here. Unfortunately their website has functionality and language issues so it’s not easy to use, so you can buy the license in the morning right before you fish for the first time. The cost is $15 for one week or $30 for one month and it must be paid in cash.

How many people will be on my fishing boat?

All fishing charters booked by Central America Fishing are private, so the boat is 100% yours. We do not set up any shared charters.

What is the standard tip for a fishing charter in Costa Rica?

A standard tip for a charter fishing crew in Costa Rica is 10%-20% of the cost of the charter. Most captains are paid a low salary with the idea they’ll earn more tips the more they fish, but many mates rely 100% on tips for their income. Tipping in USD or Costa Rican colones is fine. We recommend giving the entire tip to the captain and let him divide it up with the mate.

Can I bring my own fishing gear?

OF COURSE! Even though our private charters provide all the fishing tackle and bait you’ll need, you are always welcome to bring your own lures, reels, and even rods if you want to catch fish using your own tackle. Fly anglers are always encouraged to bring their own fly gear.

Which fish in Costa Rica are catch and release and which ones can I keep to eat?

By law, all billfish in Costa Rica are strictly catch and release. While not a law, we also strongly encourage releasing all roosterfish, tarpon, and cubera snapper as they are such prized inshore species. Other species like tuna, dorado (mahi), wahoo, snappers, groupers, corvina, snook can be kept and enjoyed for a fresh seafood dinner.

Can I bring fish back home with me to my own country?

If you really want to enjoy your catch our best advice is to eat it while it’s fresh here in Costa Rica. We understand many of you love the idea of a Costa Rican seafood dinner in the comforts of your own home, so the good news is there is no law against it and people do it all the time. However – we do not have the final say in this so there are some things you need to keep in mind:

1 – Unlike some other popular fishing destinations, in Costa Rica there is no service that will package and ship fish home for you. If you want to bring fish home with you you’ll have to do it yourself in your own luggage. Our best advice is to bring down a soft sided, leak-proof cooler, have your fish frozen completely solid, wrap them in newspaper, and then check your cooler as part of your luggage since it will stay cooler in the cargo hold of the plane versus in the cabin as a carry-on. If you don’t have a cooler or forget to bring one, you can purchase affordable plastic coolers here in local grocery stores.

2 – While Costa Rica does not prohibit you from bringing fish fillets home with you, your international airline might. We strongly recommend you confirm this with your airline (in writing if possible) or you may have the fish confiscated from you at the airport check-in.

3 – Even if your airline lets you fly the fish home, your local customs may have an issue with you bringing in meat products from a foreign country. In our experience most customs agents don’t seem too interested in you bringing back frozen fish fillets from your fishing vacation to Costa Rica, but it can depend on the agent and depend on the day.

What if there is bad weather on our fishing day?

First of all, it is extremely rare to have a fishing day cancelled due to bad weather. Costa Rica is too far south for hurricanes, and on top of that we custom design every single one of our Costa Rica fishing packages to factor in not only where you’ll have the best fishing but also the best weather & sea conditions for the time of year you visit us.

It does happen every once in a while however, so if the captain, local marina, or government deem the conditions are unsafe the trip will be cancelled.  The first course of action is to try and reschedule you, but if that is not possible you will be refunded in full.

Please note that rain and dark clouds are not considered bad weather. We are in the tropics and rain is a common occurrence here so that is not a cause for cancelling the trip. Many great fishing days happen in the rain – as they say the fish are wet anyway!

About the Author

I first visited Costa Rica during a semester abroad in 2003 and instantly fell in love with the language, culture, and natural beauty. I caught my first roosterfish on that trip and knew that I wanted to live here, so I graduated and returned full time in 2005. Today I can proudly say that I’ve been in Costa Rica for half of my life, I met my wife here, and my two boys were born here so they are “Ticos”.

I’ve been working in the sport fishing industry in Central America for twenty years, I’ve had articles published in fishing magazines, hosted fishing TV shows, fished in several tournaments, and I’m a four-time IGFA trophy club member. I am however most proud to say that 40% of our anglers are repeat and referral guests. I’ve personally visited every destination, hotel, and fishing lodge that we partner with so that your next vacation with us is one of the best you’ve ever had.
