Enjoy three nights in the rainforest at the foothills of the Mayan Mountains at the award winning Chaa Creek. Listed on Travel & Leisure’s ‘World’s Best’ and Conde Nast’s ‘Gold List’, you’ll be amazed by the twenty three luxurious yet eco-friendly palm thatched cottages that sit above the Macal River. -
Day Two
Your stay at Chaa Creek includes complimentary early morning bird watching with a naturalist guide so we suggest you wake up with the rainforest and see an incredible amount of wildlife before you even eat your first Belizean breakfast. Hundreds of birds, wild cats, sloths, monkeys, and tapir roam their 365 acre nature reserve so you ever know what you’ll see. Your stay here also includes guided tours of their natural history center and butterfly farm, guided tour of their Maya medicine plant trail, and canoeing up the Macal River. Use this day to explore the rainforest and enjoy Belize’s natural wonders!
-
Day Three
Western Belize is home to many the country’s top Mayan ruins and is just hours away from the most popular Mayan site of all, Tikal. Actually located in Guatemala, Tikal was the capital city of the Mayan world and today is not only a UNESCO world heritage site but also a 222 sq mile national park home to crocodiles, caiman, jaguar, monkeys, tapir, and hundreds of species of birds. Located just 2.5 hours away, you will do a day trip to Tikal and cross back into Belize all before dinner.
-
Day Four
Late in the morning you will be transferred to the San Ignacio Airstrip for a short domestic flight out to San Pedro and Ambergris Caye. Upon arrival you’ll be met by a representative of the famous El Pescador fly fishing resort and taken by boat 10 minutes to the lodge. Part of what makes El Pescador a world renowned fly fishing destination isn’t just the incredible flats fishing they offer, but the fact that they’ve been doing it for 40 years! Family owned and operated El Pescador offers the finest fly fishing in the world in a warm family style atmosphere. After you get your orientation of the fishing you can grab your fly rod and head down to the dock for complimentary fly lessons. Offered every day at 4:30 by the resident casting instructor this is a great way to get the rust off and practice your double haul to nail those 90 ft casts. Enjoy a family style surf & turf dinner then get to bed so you can get up early and go fly fishing!
-
Day Five
Let’s go fishing! Meet your guide early in the morning so he can go over your fly selection and pick out any other flies you’ll need from the fly shop. Gotcha’s and Crazy Charlies are favorite picks for bonefish while crab patterns are a must for permit. While floating line is going to be used the vast majority of the time it is recommended to have one reel ready with intermediate sinking line in case the permit or bonefish are in deeper water due to the tides. A 9’-9.5’ 8 wt rod is recommended for bonefish, a 9 wt for permit, and a 10 wt for tarpon. Head out on one of El Pescador’s 23’ super pangas for a day of poling and wading the flats as you try for the elusive grand slam.
-
Day Six
Let’s go fishing! El Pescador boasts a 400 sq mile fishery so there is no shortage of flats to see tailing permit or sandy coastlines around the various cayes to sight cast to bonefish. Few things get your heart pumping like the experience of stalking a school of feeding permit, perfectly placing a cast without spooking them, then starting to do your slow strip as you wait for that bite. Notorious for being as picky as they are spooky, landing a permit is always an accomplishment, even at a fly fishing resort as famous as El Pescador. Land one and you’ll be a hero at the dinner table for the week.
-
Day Seven
Last day of fishing! You’ve landed too many bonefish to count so today get out your 10 wt and hunt for the silver king. Large adults and juveniles can be found north of El Pescador near the Mexican border or most days right in the lagoon on the back side of the island. On good days you’ll see them rolling and can sight cast to them, other days you’ll blind cast and begin a slow strip as you wait for the surface to explode. Set the hook firmly and get ready to bow to the king!
-
Day Eight
Transfer back to the San Pedro Airstrip and take a quick 20 minute flight back to the BZE Airport for your international flight home.
