History of Golf in Costa Rica

The first golf course in Costa Rica dates back to the 1940’s when a small par-3 executive course was built at the Costa Rica Country Club. Located in the affluent suburb of San Jose called Escazu, this members-only course didn’t appeal to or attract the masses, so it remained the only golf course in Costa Rica for the next three decades. In 1973 another private club, the Cariari Country Club, built the first 18-hole course in the suburb of Heredia just north of San Jose. Off limits and out of reach financially for many Ticos, golf as a popular sport accessible to any and everyone didn’t catch on here until tourism started to boom in the 1990s.

As tourism took off in the late 1990’s, so did golf as four new 18-hole courses were opened at luxury beach resorts from 1996 to 2024. This includes the Reserva Conchal (1996), Hacienda Pinilla (1997), Los Suenos (1999) and finally the Arnold Palmer-designed course at the Peninsula Papagayo (2004). In addition to those luxury golf resorts, in 2001 a new 18-hole course opened to the public in a high-end residential community west of San Jose named Valle del Sol.

In addition to the main six 18-hole courses, there are several par-3 courses that dot the country in various smaller resorts and residential communities. While these aren’t necessarily worth going out of your way to visit, they do stand as a testament to the growing popularity of golf in Costa Rica. Whether you want to play a round of golf to break up your fishing days or golf even more than you fish, Costa Rica now boasts an impressive combination of 18-hole championship courses, state-of-the-art marinas, and a plethora of luxury resorts and private villas to make your fishing and golf vacation here one to remember.

In fact, golf has risen to such mainstream popularity here that there are now multiple indoor simulators to enjoy rain or shine, day or night. If you want to fine-tune your swing in a simulator before you play your full rounds, let us know and we can arrange it for you. We may even see you there since we play multiple times a week in golf leagues!

Where Are the Best Golf Courses in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is home to six different 18-hole golf courses and a handful of 9-hole executive courses dotted throughout the country. There are two 18-hole courses located in the Central Valley around the capital of San Jose, three in the Northern Pacific region of the country known as Guanacaste, and one along the Central Pacific Coast at the famous Los Sueños Resort & Marina. We can plan your Costa Rica fishing & golf vacation around a specific course you want to play or resort you want to stay at, or we can custom design your itinerary so you can golf multiple courses. All of that can be intertwined with world class sport fishing. During the planning process, we will let you know which airport to fly into and of course take into account local weather patterns and fishing seasons to make sure your time on the water is as fun as the time spent on the short grass. Below is a map and description of the six best golf courses in Costa Rica.

#1 – The Ocean Course at Peninsula Papagayo

At the top of our list is the spectacular Ocean Course located on the exclusive Peninsula Papagayo. Home to the Four Seasons, the Andaz Papagayo, and some of the most lavish private villas in the country, everything about the Peninsula Papagayo is five stars. Designed by the one and only Arnold Palmer, this course combines the contours of the peninsula that has you surrounded by both rainforest and the Pacific Ocean. The course is Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary and is endorsed by the United States Golf Association. Throughout the course they have labeled important trees and you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for both howler and white-faced capuchin monkeys. The golf facilities include a driving range, practice green, pro shop, and golf pros for private instructions. Rated as one of Golfweek’s Top 25 Courses in the Caribbean/Mexico and one of the ‘Top 100 Courses Outside the USA’ by Golf Digest, it will not disappoint.

#2 – The Garra de Leon at Reserva Conchal

Next on our list is the other internationally ranked 18-hole golf course in Costa Rica, the Garra de Leon. Designed by Robert Trent Jones II, the “Lion’s Paw” is found at the gorgeous Reserva Conchal property. This was the first Audubon-certified course in Costa Rica and boasts an impressive sustainability efforts including bambu tees and a new water system that uses 100% of the waste water from the Westin Conchal Resort to water the greens and gardens. Golfers should keep an eye out for local wildlife including monkeys, deer, coatis, and several species of birds. This long course features several changes in elevation, rivers, lakes, and 63 sand traps! The golf facilities include a driving range, practice green, pro shop, and golf pros for private instructions. The Garra de Leon has also been included in Golfweek’s Top 50 Courses in the Caribbean/Mexico, ranking between #18 and #30 since 2006 and has hosted the PGA Tour Latin America.

#3 – Hacienda Pinilla

Located on a sprawling 4,500 acre property that includes three miles of pristine beaches, the golf course at Hacienda Pinilla is as beautiful as it is challenging. Yet another Audubon-certified course since 2001, the course weaves a magnificent balance between the dry tropical forest and the Pacific coastline. The longest of Costa Rica’s 18-hole courses, holes #8 and #18 are both over 550 yds and #14 measures a whopping 653 yds! If you can time it right, try to play your back nine in the afternoon because holes #15 and #16 will treat you to an incredible display of colors as the sun starts to set over the Pacific. The golf facilities include a driving range, practice green, pro shop, and golf pros for private instructions.

#4 – La Iguana at Los Sueños Resort & Marina

One of our favorite golf courses in Costa Rica is the La Iguana at the famous Los Sueños Resort and Marina. Built to make Los Sueños a truly complete resort along with the marina, luxury condos and villas, and beach club, La Iguana is the only 18-hole course located along Costa Rica’s popular Central Pacific Coast so it serves anglers from both Los Sueños and Quepos an hour to the south. La Iguana offers golfers a unique mix of resort holes that weave through the various condos and private villas, holes that go deep into Los Sueños’s 1,100 acres of rainforest, all before ending with three holes along the coast. The rainforest is considerably more lush along the Central Pacific than the dry forests in Guanacaste, so if you aren’t accurate with your drives or long irons be prepared with a few extra sleeves of balls. During the round golfers can expect to see monkeys, beautiful scarlet macaws soaring noisily overhead, over 150 species of birds, and yes, plenty of large iguanas. The golf facilities at Los Sueños include a driving range, practice green, pro shop, locker rooms, and golf pros for private instructions and swing analysis.

#5 – Valle del Sol in San Jose (Santa Ana)

When the Valle del Sol 18-hole golf course opened in 2001, it finally brought golf in San Jose out of the private country clubs and into the public’s reach. Located in the western suburb of Santa Ana, Valle del Sol is an oasis in Costa Rica’s bustling Central Valley as the course is full of ponds, ducks, and colorful bougainvillea. Santa Ana offers visitors cooler temperatures than the golf courses located along the coast due to San Jose’s elevation of 3,000 ft above sea level while also being one of the hottest and driest regions of the Central Valley. During your round you’ll be caught staring at the surrounding green mountain ranges more than once, which include the Irazu and Poas Volcanoes. The 7,011 yd course favors accuracy more than distance, although the par-5 18th hole plays at 632 yds from the black tees. Golf facilities at Valle del Sol include a driving range, practice green, pro shop, club rentals, restaurant and golf pros for private instructions.

#6 – Cariari Country Club in San Jose (Heredia)

Costa Rica’s first 18-hole golf course was built in 1973 at the private Cariari Country Club, which is still going strong today. Located in the suburb of Heredia about six miles north of the capital San Jose, Cariari Country Club provides it’s golfers with cooler temps and great mountain vistas during their round. While not particularly a long course, architect George Fazio put a premium on accurate tee shots as many of the fairways are tightly lined with local Costa Rican trees. The 6,577 yd course used to be private exclusively to country club members, but has since softened it’s stance to become a semi-private course that is open to the public certain days a week. Golf facilities at the Cariari Country Club include a driving range, practice green, pro shop, club rentals, restaurant and golf pros for private instruction.

The 18-hole golf course at the Cariari Country Club in Costa Rica

When is the Best Time for a Fishing & Golf Vacation to Costa Rica?

Costa Rica’s six 18-hole golf courses are spread throughout the country, and with two oceans we literally have great fishing and golfing 12 months a year. Our dry season rusn from December through April while the green season runs from May to November. No matter what time of year you visit however, chances are extremely high that you’ll have an 8–10-hour window of sunny skies to golf before any afternoon rains start to fall. The benefit to playing in the dry season is that you can play twighlight rates or replay the course at a discounted rate. The benefit to playing during our green season is that there are less crowds and the entire course and surrounding rainforest are lush.

Costa Rica essentially has two weather seasons and two fishing seasons that closely mimic each other, so it’s easy to for us to match up the right golf course with the best fishing season based what time of year you are visiting. The Guanacaste region has a different peak fishing season than the Central Pacific, so knowing which part of the country to visit is of the utmost importance. Once you contact us and we have a better idea of what you want to fish for, how many days you want to golf, and when you are visiting, we will customize a vacation package to put you in the right spot, at the right time.

Costa Rica Golf Resorts

Costa Rica is proud to offer four world class golf resorts located along it’s warm, sunny Pacific Coast. Internationally acclaimed luxury resorts like the JW Marriott Guanacaste, the Westin Playa Conchal, the Four Seasons & Andaz Papagayo, and the Los Sueños Resort & Marina are all home to their own 18-hole courses. If you dream of fishing and golfing in Costa Rica while staying at a 5-star luxury resort, you can’t go wrong with any of these. Many of these resorts also have private villas and condos we can rent for groups or families. Of course, fishing is never far away as Los Suenos and Papagayo have their own marinas while local charter captains are no more than ten minutes away from the others.

However, just like you don’t need to stay at a fishing lodge to experience great fishing in Costa Rica, you don’t need to stay at a luxury golf resort in order to play some of Costa Rica’s best courses either. If don’t have a 5-star budget or simply prefer smaller boutique properties, that is no problem as we customize 100% of our Costa Rica Fishing & Golf Packages so we can have you vacation close to one of these golf courses but stay in the budget and style that you are comfortable with. Some of the courses are only open to hotel guests, while others are open to the public, so we can help you arrange the perfect golf vacation in Costa Rica. Being local experts and avid golfers ourselves, we have personally played every course here and visited every single property we represent, so we’ll use our personal experience to design the perfect fishing & golf package for your group.

Costa Rica Golf Tournaments

Throughout the year, Costa Rica’s championship 18-hole courses host several tournaments that are open to the public. There are a few stroke play tournaments that are quite competitive, but our personal favorite are the scramble tournaments. Fun for golfers of any handicap, scramble tournaments in Costa Rica are a ton of fun, offer great prizes, and are a great way to compete with the team comradery.

Our favorite is the La Iguana Invitational, which is held every Super Bowl Weekend at the beautiful Los Suenos Resort & Marina. The regular round of 18 is challenging and offers prizes from sponsors on nearly every whole, but to make it even more fun the top half of teams are invited to play the special round of night golf. The final three holes are marked with glow sticks and players given colored-light golf balls, which is as fun as it is challenging. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these golf tournaments, let us know during the planning process and we can match up your travel dates with one of the local tournaments.

Costa Rica Day Tours & Non-Fishing Activities

Our Costa Rica fishing & golf packages are flexible enough to allow you to experience the other highlights that make Costa Rica such a popular vacation destination. Costa Rica is just as famous for its lush rain forest, incredible wildlife, beautiful beaches, volcanoes, and of course a long list of adventure tours that it’s hard to fit it all in during a week-long visit. Whether it’s an off day from fishing or for the non-anglers in your group, there are several great eco and adventure tours available. We can also customize your Costa Rica fishing vacation so you spend a few nights in different locations throughout the country so you can see how diverse it is. The list includes:

  • Canopy zip-line tour
  • White Water Rafting
  • Waterfall rappelling
  • ATVs
  • Horseback Riding
  • Surfing
  • Golf
  • Guided tours of national parks
  • Waterfalls

What Our Guests Love
About
Golfing in Costa Rica

E

It’s near impossible to spend four hours outside playing golf in Costa Rica and not be blown away by the natural beauty. Whether you are surrounded by mountains and volcanoes in San Jose or enjoying ocean views on the Pacific Coast, golf in Costa Rica is beautiful.

E

For most of our CAF guests, fishing is the primary activity and golf is secondary. Once here, most of our golfers are blown away by the quality, length, and difficulty of our championship golf courses.

E

Costa Rica makes a golfer’s life easy as the golf pros are certified instructors and speak great English, it’s always going to be 80-90 degrees on the coast, and you can rent clubs once you are here.

E

Being able to rotate fishing and golf days to work and rest different parts of your body each day is something our anglers love.

What We Love
About Golfing in Costa Rica

E

Costa Rica’s bet 18-hole golf courses al l happen to be located in or near our best fishing towns, so creating a fishing & golf package is easy and fun for us to do. If there isn’t a marina right on site, we can create a package for you that has a golf course within 15 minutes of where you are staying.

E

Costa Rica is a relatively small country, so we have the ability to custom-create fishing & golf packages that have you golf multiple courses and fish in different locations in the same week.

E

Similar to when we are fishing, seeing the amazing marine life in Costa Rica such as turtles, whales, and huge pods of dolphins is a thrill. The same goes for golfing as you are likely to see monkeys, scarlet macaws, and maybe even sloths during your round.

Costa Rica Golf FAQs

How much does it cost to golf in Costa Rica?

A round of 18 holes of golf in Costa Rica ranges between $80-$150.  The 18-hole golf courses located at luxury resorts along the Pacific Coast tend to be more expensive, usually in the $150 range.  The two 18-hole courses in San Jose are more reasonable at $80-$90 for 18 holes.

Do I need to bring my own clubs or can I rent them?

All of the 18-hole golf courses in Costa Rica have pro shops that allow you to rent clubs. These typically range from $60-$70 per round. Left-handed clubs are available, but limited, so it’s best to reserve in advance.

Can I bring my own clubs if I want to?

Of course! Many of our hardcore golfers who plan on playing multiple rounds of golf bring down their own clubs. This is as easy as getting a travel bag and paying the extra baggage fee with your airline.

Is there a dress code at the golf courses in Costa Rica?

Yes. The 18-hole courses here are very nice and are either part of a luxury resort or a private country club, so proper golf attire is required. It’s Costa Rica after all so it will be hot, so shorts are OK but you can’t wear jeans, sandals, or open-toed shoes.  A collard golf shirt is also recommended.

Are there pro shops where I can buy golf gear that I don't have?

Yes. All of our 18-hole courses have pro shops where you can buy balls, tees, hats, shirts, and souvenir towels.

Do we need a caddy or will one be provided?

None of the courses here require caddies, but they are available. If it is your first time playing golf in Costa Rica, a caddy is often worth every penny to guide you through each hole, watch your tee shots, and help clean your golf balls (especially during rainy season).

We are visiting in the rainy season, can we still golf?

Of course – one of the many things to love about Costa Rica is that we golf year-round here!  Costa Rica’s green season, or rainy season, runs from May through November. During these seven months, the vast majority of days start off hot and sunny until the mid-afternoon where it gets cloudy and usually rains for a few hours. Most days you have a window from 6 AM to 2-4 PM to golf without a drop of rain. Of course we are used to the weather here, so course conditions remain fantastic even during our green season.

How do I make tee times?

When you book your golf trip to Costa Rica with Central America Fishing, we are more than happy to make tee times for you. We can also reserve rental clubs if you know you will need them.

About the Author

I first visited Costa Rica during a semester abroad in 2003 and instantly fell in love with the language, culture, and natural beauty. I caught my first roosterfish on that trip, and ever since then I knew that I wanted to live here. After graduating in 2004, I worked for a year in the corporate world, but I was unhappy and unstimulated, so I returned to live in Costa Rica full time in 2005. Today I can proudly say that I’ve been in Costa Rica for half of my life, I met my wife here, and my two boys were born here so they are “Ticos”.

I’ve been working in the sport fishing industry in Central America for twenty years, I’ve had articles published in fishing magazines, hosted fishing TV shows, fished in several tournaments, and I’m a four-time IGFA trophy club member. I am however most proud to say that 40% of our anglers are repeat and referral guests. I’ve personally visited every destination, hotel, and fishing lodge that we partner with so that your next vacation with us is one of the best you’ve ever had.
