At a Glance
Experience the excitement of fishing four different destinations in one epic Costa Rica fishing vacation. First you’ll head to the Caribbean Coast to fish for giant tarpon and snook along the coast and in the freshwater canals. Next you’ll head to the central highlands of Costa Rica to fish for machaca and rainbow bass on Lake Arenal. From here you’ll visit the Cano Negro Wildlife Reserve on a day trip where you can fish the lagoons and rivers for tarpon, snook, rainbow bass and tropical gar. Finally end your vacation fishing on our vibrant Pacific Coast and the ‘fishing capital of Costa Rica’ – Quepos. Home to the new Marina Pez Vela, here you can enjoy Costa Rica’s best offshore fishing for billfish and tuna, inshore fishing for roosterfish, and even more freshwater fishing on jungle rivers and mangroves. This package can be arranged for fly fishing or conventional/spinning tackle.

Day One
Fly into San Jose, Costa Rica where you will be met at the airport and taken to your waiting private van. You’ll spend your first night here in the capital city at the beautiful Grano de Oro Hotel. With rooftop Jacuzzis and the best restaurant in the city, this is a great place to start your fishing excursion.

Day Two
We will pick you up in the morning for your 30 minute flight to the Caribbean Coast and the small town of Tortuguero. Here you’ll stay at the Pachira Lodge, an 88 room eco-luxury lodge, and as soon as you check in you can head out fishing with our top local guide for an incredible day of tarpon fishing. A 13 wt rod is best to handle these mammoth tarpon, and having two reels with floating line an intermediate sinking line is a wise move so you can adjust with the conditions and the fish.

Day Three
Let’s go fishing! Today is another full day of fly fishing for giant tarpon. Your guide, Primo, is local to the area and has 25 years of experience fishing here so you’ll be in great hands to get a shot at multiple tarpon. Some days they can be rolling in the Caribbean and other days you’ll find them in the fresh water canals, but either way it’ll be an exciting challenge for even the most skilled of anglers.

Day Four
You’ll take a covered boat ride through the canals of the Barra de Colorado Refuge until you reach the mainland again. Once you arrive we’ll take you west across the country until you reach the famous Arenal Volcano. Your next stop is the beautiful Arenal Manoa where you will have great views of the volcano from the queen bed in your room. The Arenal Manoa features two pools, swim up bars, a restaurant, and great views from everywhere on the property.

Day Five
Today you’ll fly fish Costa Rica’s largest lake, Lake Arenal. Your guide will be Tirsio, one of the best anglers in the entire country and someone who brings 30 years of experience to fishing that lake. You’ll have the opportunity to fly fish for tilapia, rainbow bass, and what we call ‘mini tarpon’ – the machaca. With over 33 sq miles there is no shortage of protected coves and river mouths to fish in.

Day Six
Venture 1.5 hours north of the Arenal Volcano near the Nicaraguan border and into the exotic Cano Negro Wildlife Resreve. This 10,000 acre wetland is home to over 300 species of birds, caiman, crocodile, jaguars, monkeys, river turtles, and many others mammals and reptiles. Fed principally by the Rio Frio, which connects to the Rio San Juan and out to the Caribbean, Cano Negro is also home to an incredibly diverse fishery. Thought to be a spawning ground for tarpon, fly fishing for these prehistoric beasts in 50 ft wide jungle rivers is an experience not easily forgotten. You can also fly fish for snook, rainbow bass, machaca, and tropical gar in season.

Day Seven
Today we’ll leave the Arenal Volcano and take you down to the Pacific Coast for the last stop on your cross country fly fishing journey. You’ll be in Manuel Antonio where you will stay in a private bungalow on the beautiful 33-acre Tulemar property which features three pools, a restaurant, and its own private beach. Today is a travel and relaxation day as you change locations and rest your muscles.

Day Eight
Next up on your fly fishing target list – Pacific Sailfish. Costa Rica is one of the few countries in the world with a billfish bite that is consistent enough to let anglers try to catch them with a fly rod. Raising 20-30 billfish in a day is not uncommon, so with our expert crews teasing the fish right to the back of the boat you should have plenty of chances to land a true trophy.

Day Nine
Free day! Relax and enjoy your private beach, head to the Manual Antonio National Park, or set up a tour like snorkeling or the famous canopy zip-line.

Day Ten
Today is your fourth and final fly fishing venue, the jungle river float trip. Float down the Savegre River and coast through Class II rapids with your pro fly guide and cast towards the shoreline in hopes of landing up to six different species today. A 5-6 wt rod will be provided for you, and as we call this the “Float of 1,000 Casts” you’ll have plenty of opportunity to set some hooks!

Day Eleven
Head back out on the Pacific for one last shot at landing a billfish on the fly. We customize your fishing vacation down to the type of engines the boats have as well as knowing which mates have the most experience teasing fish to the boat so that your fly fishing experience is as productive as possible.

Day Twelve
We’ll pick you up early for your short fly back to the SJO Airport and your international flight home.
