Costa Rica’s Best Fishing Resorts & Marinas

Costa Rica is home to several world class marinas that are known throughout the international fishing community. Combining luxurious 5-star resorts, fully furnished upscale condos, and exclusive private villas with an on-site marina is a set up that is hard to beat. These resort-marina properties are adequately labeled ‘fishing resorts’ not only due the luxurious accommodations, but also the long list of amenities that they make available to anglers and non-anglers alike. These include lavish pools, spas, multiple on-site restaurants, convenience stores, boutique shops, and even tennis courts and championship 18-hole golf courses.

The premier resort & marina stands as Costa Rica’s flagship marina. Home to some of the best charter boats, private yachts, and fishing captains in the country, Los Sueños is a paradise for seasoned tournament anglers, vacationing anglers, and even the non-anglers in your group. Lush, manicured gardens surround every condo complex, each of which comes with an air-conditioned gym and pool area. The luxury condos are fully furnished with AC, international cable TV, wifi, full kitchen, washer & dryer, and include maid service. For larger groups and more exclusivity, private villas ranging from 3-bedrooms to 8-bedrooms are available and feature expansive common areas, private pools, and all the creature comforts that come with the condos.

The Los Sueños Marina was built in Herradura Bay not only for it’s easy access from San Jose and the SJO Airport, but for it’s proximity to some of the best offshore sport fishing in the world. Costa Rica has earned the nickname “the billfish capital of the world” due to the incredible sailfish and marlin numbers raked in here year after year. The fishing is so good, the marina hosts the most prestigious billfish tournament in country every January, February, and March – the Los Sueños Triple Crown. With a 201-slip marina, fishing boats range in size from economical 27′-31′ sport fishers to 50′-60′ tournament yachts so there is an option to fit any budget and level of experience.

Distance from Airport: 75 minutes from the SJO Airport
Distance from the Fishing: The Los Sueños Marina is just .25 to .75 miles away from the various condo complexes and private villas on site.
While walking is possible, renting a golf cart during your stay is easy, affordable, and highly recommended.

#2 – Marina Pez Vela Villas

Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, Costa Rica

The new marina village in Quepos, Costa Rica

The classic Costa Rican fishing town of Quepos was brought into the 21s century when the state of the art Marina Pez Vela replaced the famously treacherous cement pier, known as “El Muelle”, in 2010. In tandem with the 195-slip marina, the Marina Pez Vela features a charming commercial plaza where you’ll find multiple restaurants and bars, a salon, tour operators, real estate office, convenience store, and several boutique shops. On the second level of the square are the brand new Marina Pez Vela Villas. The luxury, fully furnished 2-bedroom/2-bathroom and 3-bedroom/3-bathroom condos come equipped with AC, international cable TV, wifi, full kitchen, washer & dryer, and large balconies. In addition to being steps away from the fishing boats in the morning and nightlife once the sun goes down, guests can enjoy guest-only access to the rooftop pool area. For those who want to fully immerse themselves in the marina and sport fishing lifestyle, few places in Costa Rica can put you closer to the action than the Marina Pez Vela Villas.

Anglers have been traveling to Quepos since the 1980’s to enjoy the incredible inshore and offshore sport fishing. Long before the Los Suenos Marina opened in 2001, Quepos was the place to be if you were looking to catch your first billfish. The billfishing was so good, Quepos used to host an annual fly fishing tournament. The Marina Pez Vela gave the Quepos charter fishing fleet a much needed upgrade, now anglers can walk the docks of the 195-slip marina instead of the old cement pier with it’s floating dock. The calm waters off of Quepos offer phenomenal offshore fishing just 20-30 miles from the marina as well as some of the best inshore fishing in the country for snappers, jacks, big Pacific snook, and of course the famous roosterfish. It has been the host of the Offshore World Championship every year since 2013. The Marina Pez Vela still offers some of the most affordable offshore fishing trips in Costa Rica as 27′-31′ sport fishers are available for smaller groups while 40′-60′ tournament yachts await the hardcore anglers.

Distance from Airport: 2.5 hr drive or 30 minute domestic flight from the SJO Airport
Distance from the Fishing: The Marina Pez Vela Villas are literally 150 ft away from the docks.
Accommodations: Eight fully furnished 2 and 3 bedroom luxury condos
On-Site Amenities: Rooftop pool and a vibrant marina village with several restaurants, tour operators, convenience store, salon, and boutique shops
including the first and only international Pelagic store. Outdoor movies for kids when weather permits.
Best Time to Fish at the Marina Pez Vela: November through July

Costa Rica’s Best Fishing Lodges

For those looking for more of the traditional all inclusive fishing trip in Costa Rica without the crowds of a larger resort, we have you covered there as well. In Costa Rica there are a handful of iconic saltwater fishing lodges that have been putting anglers on fish for nearly three decades. Costa Rica’s best fishing lodges are found in the remote corners of the country on both coasts that have yet to be developed by the larger tourism industry. The remote Northern Caribbean Coast offers world record sized snook and some of the best tarpon fishing in the Americas with sliver kings that average 80-100 lbs. On the Pacific Coast in the exotic Osa Peninsula, anglers can enjoy amazing offshore fishing for marlin, sailfish, tuna, and dorado as well as light tackle inshore fishing for over 20 species – including of course roosterfish and cubera snapper.

#2 – Crocodile Bay Lodge (now known as Botanika Osa Peninsula)

Crocodile Bay Marina in Costa Rica
New Botanika Resort at Crocodile Bay
Sailfish caught at Crocodile Bay, Costa Rica

Since the year 2000, perhaps no other fishing lodge in Costa Rica has become more of a household name than the Crocodile Bay Lodge. Located in the exotic Osa Peninsula near Puerto Jimenez, Crocodile Bay offered all-inclusive accommodations, air-conditioned rooms, great food, a 5,000 sq ft spa, pool with swim up bar, and of course access to some of the best inshore and offshore fishing on the Pacific. The original lodge featured 34 comfortable, classic lodge-style rooms with local hardwood, comfortable beds, and private bathrooms. For the better part of two decades, it was the perfect mix of rustic luxury that anglers absolutely adored as it became the flagship Costa Rica fishing lodge.

All of that was written in past-tense because no other fishing lodge has gone through a greater makeover than Crocodile Bay. In the rumor mill and then construction phase for years, in 2021 the original Crocodile Bay Lodge ceased to exist and officially became the Botanika Osa Peninsula, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton. Long gone are the charming lodge rooms as they have been replaced by 138 luxurious, chic guest rooms and suites. The small pool anglers loved to cool off and tell stories in has been replaced by a lagoon style pool. New amenities feature a state-of-the-art gym, spa, and several restaurants. The new Botanika is stunningly gorgeous and one-of-a-kind in the Puerto Jimenez area, but as someone who visited and enjoyed the original Crocodile Bay Lodge, it will take some getting used to!

Even with the new Hilton Curio Collection property, the Crocodile Bay fishing operation still exists so anglers can still experience incredible numbers of billfish, dorado, and tuna offshore as well as the variety of light tackle inshore species. A walk down their private 800 ft pier brings you to a large fleet of boats ranging from 24′ Boston Whalers to larger 33′ Strike boats. All boats are outfitted with 50 and 30 Penn International reels for offshore fishing and 20 and 30 pound conventional and spinning tackle for inshore and light tackle fishing.

How to Arrive: 50-minute charter flight from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez. Once in Puerto Jimenez, the Botanika is just minutes away.
Accommodations: 138 guest rooms and 1, 2, and 3-bedroom suites
Includes: The original Crocodile Bay Lodge was all inclusive, the new Botanika does not include any meals but has two restaurants on-site and offers room service.
Boat Fleet: The Crocodile Bay Marina still offers a large private sport fishing fleet from their 800 ft private dock. The boats from the original lodge are all still available, including 24′ and 25′ Boston Whaler Outrage for small groups and 33′ and 35′ Strike boats for larger parties.
Target Species: Marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado offshore. Roosterfish, cubera snapper, jacks, snook inshore.
Best Time to Fish at the Crocodile Bay Lodge / Botanika: December through June.

Rio Parismina is one of Costa Rica's best tarpon fishing lodges
Big snook at the Rio Parismina Lodge in Costa Rica

For the past 30 years, the Rio Parismina Lodge has been one of Costa Rica’s premier tarpon lodges. It’s no coincidence that the leadership of Judy Heidt, the founder of Rio P and a world record holder herself, still runs the operation. Built on 50 acres of tropical jungle, Rio P offers comfortable lodging, great food, and access to some of the best tarpon and snook fishing in the world. The lodge features just 12 rooms, each assigned it’s own boat and local tarpon guide for the week, so group sizes are never more than 24 and the comradery of a remote fishing lodge is enjoyed on every trip. The Rio Parismina Lodge is all inclusive so three delicious meals a day and full open bar are part of your fishing package.

The main reason anglers flock to Rio P is for the incredible tarpon and snook fishing found just a couple miles from the lodge. With access to five different river mouths, trophy fish can be found just about every day you hit the water. Rio P sends it’s tarpon anglers out on custom built 21′ deep-V hull boats that are fast, spacious and can punch through the waves of the river mouth with ease. They also have a fleet of 10′ John boats, which are perfect for exploring the miles upon miles of freshwater rivers and canals that are home to exotic freshwater species like machaca and rainbow bass as well tarpon and snook.

How to Arrive: 25 minute private charter flight from San Jose after spending your first night in the capital
Accommodations: 12 rooms, each with two beds, ceiling fan, oscillating fans, safe, and a private bathroom with hot water shower
Includes: 3 meals a day, full open bar, pool, jacuzzi, and hammock garden along the river

When is the Best Time to Fish in Costa Rica?

Deciding which Costa Rican fishing lodge or resort to book is an important decision, but knowing WHEN to visit is as important. You can spend all the money you like on the best accommodations and the best fishing boat available, but if you are in the wrong spot at the wrong time it won’t matter. Costa Rica has two main weather seasons, and the fishing tends to be very much in line with these. First of all, the Pacific and Caribbean Coasts have very different weather seasons. Secondly, the Northern Pacific has very different fishing season than the Central or Southern Pacific. Our Costa Rica Fishing Calendar can help give you an idea, but when you contact us we’ll make sure you are in the right spot at the right time for the fishing you want to do.
